The
two sides of photography
I have learned many things over the years from teaching photography. One important idea is there are two parts or sides to photography. Photography is both craft and art. Craft is the doing part. It is the f-stops and shutter speeds. It is knowing how the camera, lens, sensor and now Photoshop see differently than the human eye. Art is the seeing and feeling. Both are important but it is the seeing and feeling which makes the difference. One of my mentors took me aside one day after critiquing some of my images and stated that he had seen many images over the years. He didn't always remember what he saw but he always remembered how he felt. I was young and I was afraid to ask if he thought he would remember my images. My hope is that you remember many of my images.

Tutoring
- the stuff you could
find in a book.
I tutor clients in the craft of photography. I teach them the best photographic techniques and skills to get the most from their photography equipment. I do my very best to simplify the new language of digital photography. I teach photographic grammar so my clients can effectively communicate with the viewer. I also instruct them in how to optimize their images with Photoshop and yes, maybe a little digital voodoo. I teach my clients the best digital printing practices so they can share their images and inspire others. With the digital age the photographer has gone back to the early days of photography when the photographer captured the image, processed the image and then printed the image to share with others. I tutor my clients in this new craft of photography. I charge $50 per hour for photographic tutoring.

Coaching
- the stuff you can't
find in a book.
I coach clients who are ready to move up to the next level on their creative journey. I coach them in the art part of photography, the seeing and feeling. I show them how to drop the labels (tree, fern, bird, sunset) from a scene and see the design elements or the lines, shapes, color, texture, illusion of space, illusion of motion and value. As creative photographers we have to feel what is moving us in a scene and use our photographic tools and skills to communicate to the viewer what we are seeing and feeling. If we do our job the viewer sees and feels what we felt when we captured the image. When this magic happens we are enlarging the universe. When I coach a photographer, I ask them to send me five current images and fill out a questionnaire. I use this method to see where they are on their photographic journey. For my long distance clients, I usually critique their work over the phone and give assignments to move them to the edge of their comfort zone. I have found that we grow the fastest on the edge of our comfort zone. I charge $75 per hour for the phone coaching sessions.
Pricing:
Tutoring - $50 per hour
Coaching - $75 per hour
